croit July 2024 Update: New Features and Enhancements

We are thrilled to announce the release of croit v2407.2, bringing several exciting updates and enhancements to our software. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at the major changes introduced in this release and how they can benefit you.

NVMe-oF Support

One of the most significant enhancements in v2407.2 is the addition of support for NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics). NVMe-oF allows you to serve Ceph RBDs over a network as NVMe devices to clients, offering a high-performance alternative to iSCSI with lower latency and higher throughput.

To take advantage of NVMe-oF, you'll need a Ceph Quincy cluster (or later) with the latest croit image booted on the servers. Our latest image includes the required SPDK (Storage Performance Development Kit) for NVMe-oF functionality. For detailed instructions on setting up NVMe-oF, please refer to our user documentation.

Stay tuned to our blog in the coming weeks as we dive deeper into NVMe-oF and how it can enhance your storage solutions.

Enhanced User Experience with the New croit UI

We are excited to announce that the new croit UI is now enabled by default for new clusters. The new UI brings improved performance, new features, and a fresh design that includes our updated croit logo.

Key benefits of the new croit UI:

  • Enhanced Performance: Enjoy a faster and more responsive user interface.
  • New Features: Access the latest features designed to improve your workflow.
  • Modern Design: Experience a visually appealing interface that is intuitive and easy to navigate.

For existing clusters, the old UI will remain in use, but you can switch between the old and new UIs at any time via the croit settings page. We’d love to hear your feedback on the new UI, so please don’t hesitate to contact us at support@croit.io.

Improved Ceph Health Monitoring with New Hook Events

Monitoring the health of your Ceph clusters is now even more effective with the introduction of a new hook script event, OnHealthImprove. This event is triggered whenever the health of your Ceph cluster improves, such as when warnings disappear or partially recover.

Additionally, we’ve refined the behavior of the existing OnHealthDegrade and OnHealthRecover hook events to reduce redundant notifications when the cluster health changes rapidly in a short period. These improvements help you stay informed about your cluster's health without being overwhelmed by frequent notifications.

You can further customize the behavior of these events using the croit settings:

  • croit health hook delay: Configure how long to wait before running the hook script to prevent redundant calls.
  • croit health hook count cutoff: Limit when OnHealthImprove triggers based on partial health recoveries.

For example, with a PGs degraded warning, the count refers to the number of degraded PGs.

Updates to the croit Server Image

The latest PXE image now includes the tmux package, which is particularly useful for support scenarios as it provides a persistent shell that multiple people can access simultaneously.

We have also updated Samba to version 4.18.11, ensuring you have the latest security updates and improvements.

We hope these updates enhance your experience with croit and help you achieve even greater efficiency and performance with your storage solutions. If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to us at support@croit.io.

Stay tuned to our blog for more updates and insights on how to make the most of these new features!
