Abstract

Data is the gasoline of the digital world and there are many different ways to store it – in your own data center or in the cloud. But where which data is stored and how it is moved between may well depend on the use case.

With Ceph S3 RGW (Rados Gateway), the object storage made famous by AWS can also be provided in one’s own data center. There it can be used, for example, as a target for backup solutions or as a data lake for Big Data applications.

But what happens when more geo-redundancy is needed? Or needs to scale faster? Or conversely, when data transfers to and from the cloud drive up costs?

In this talk, we’ll provide an overview of some use cases of S3 storage in the cloud and on-premises infrastructure, and present how they can be connected and the ways in which data can be moved between them. We will also cover the features and differences of various synchronization options.
